Why Breath Cues Work
Most climbers know they should breathe better on the wall. Far fewer have a specific, practised cue they can call on when it counts. The difference matters — because at a crux, your thinking brain is already occupied. You need a response that's automatic.
Breath cues do two things simultaneously: they regulate your physiology and they interrupt the anxiety loop. A deliberate exhale drops your heart rate. A nasal breath signals safety to your nervous system. A power exhale at the hardest moment recruits your core and channels effort.
These three cues work together as a sequence — but you can also use each one independently. Start with one. Use it every session. Let it become automatic.
When you hit your rest hold — whether it's a jug, a kneebar, or just a slight reduction in effort — your first job is to exhale fully. Not a normal breath out. A long, deliberate, complete exhale that empties your lungs.
This activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the calm, recovery branch. It lowers heart rate faster than any inhale can. It signals to your brain that the emergency is over, at least temporarily. And it creates space for a deeper, slower inhale to follow.
Most climbers arrive at a rest and immediately start shallow-breathing quickly, trying to catch up on oxygen. The exhale-first approach flips that. You reset the system before you reload it.
On easier moves leading into the crux — the section where you're working but not yet at your limit — nasal breathing is your anchor. Not because nasal breathing is inherently magical, but because it's a physical governor.
You literally cannot breathe as fast through your nose as through your mouth. That restriction forces a slower, more controlled rhythm. It keeps CO₂ from spiking prematurely. It keeps your nervous system out of the red zone for a few more moves — which, at a crux, can be the difference between making it and not.
Nasal breathing also produces nitric oxide, which improves oxygen delivery and has a mild calming effect. Practically speaking, it keeps your face and jaw relaxed — and a relaxed face means a relaxed grip.
At the crux — the hardest clip, the deadpoint, the lock-off — exhale sharply and deliberately as you move. Not a hold, not a gasp. An audible, forceful exhale timed to the moment of maximum effort.
You'll recognise this from other sports: the kiai in martial arts, the grunt in tennis, the exhale in weightlifting. It's not affectation. The power exhale engages your core through intra-abdominal pressure, coordinates the breath with the movement, and — crucially — prevents the one thing that kills crux moves: the held breath.
Holding your breath at a crux causes tension to spread through the whole body. Your shoulders rise, your grip over-tightens, your movement becomes jerky. An exhale does the opposite. It releases, focuses, and commits.

Putting It Together
As a full sequence, these three cues look like this: arrive at the rest and exhale fully. Move into the sequence breathing only through your nose. At the crux, exhale sharply through the hardest move. Then find the next rest and reset.
It sounds simple. It is simple. But simple and easy aren't the same thing — especially when you're pumped, scared, or trying hard. The goal is to practise these cues on routes well below your limit until they're automatic. Then they'll be there when you need them.
