Your body doesn't have a direct sensor for oxygen depletion. What it actually monitors is the build-up of carbon dioxide in the blood. When CO₂ rises past a certain threshold, the brain triggers an urgent, uncomfortable signal: breathe now. For most people, that signal feels like panic — and panic on a wall is rarely your friend.

What CO₂ Tolerance Actually Is
CO₂ tolerance is your ability to remain calm and functional as carbon dioxide levels rise in your blood. It's a physiological threshold — but also a trained response. Some climbers have a naturally high tolerance. Most don't, and have never thought to train it.
When CO₂ rises, your chemoreceptors — sensors in your brainstem and carotid arteries — fire signals that drive the urge to breathe. The lower your tolerance, the earlier and more intensely you feel this. The higher your tolerance, the longer you can stay composed under pressure.
What This Means on the Wall
Think about what happens at a crux. You're working hard. Breathing rate climbs. CO₂ accumulates. If your tolerance is low, the discomfort arrives well before you've truly hit your physiological limit. You bail — not because you had to, but because your brain convinced you to.
Now imagine the same scenario with a trained CO₂ tolerance. The signal still comes — but it's quieter. Your breathing stays more controlled. Your grip doesn't clamp. You make the next move.

How to Train It
The good news: CO₂ tolerance is highly trainable. The basic principle is progressive exposure — you repeatedly bring yourself to the threshold of discomfort, stay there calmly, and come back. Over time, the threshold rises.
1. The Maximum Breath Hold Test (MBT)
Breathe normally, exhale gently, then hold. Note the time until your first urge to breathe — and the time until you can't hold any longer. The gap between those two points tells you a lot about your current tolerance and your ability to override the panic signal.
2. Reduced Breathing Drills
During warm-up climbing or easy traversing, deliberately breathe less than you want to. Nasal only. Slower than feels natural. This creates a mild CO₂ accumulation and trains the calm response. Start easy — this should feel mildly uncomfortable, not distressing.
3. Box Breathing Under Load
Four counts in, hold four, out four, hold four — while climbing at low intensity. The holds are the key. They allow CO₂ to rise slightly, and you practise sitting with the discomfort in a controlled way.
The Connection to Performance Thresholds
CO₂ tolerance directly influences where you perceive your Critical Power (CP) threshold to be. A climber with low tolerance will feel like they're at RPE 9 when their physiology is actually at RPE 7. They're making decisions — and bailing — based on a false reading.
Train the tolerance, and your perceived threshold shifts outward. You climb closer to your actual limit, recover more efficiently, and make better decisions under pressure. That's not a small gain — for most climbers, it's a transformational one.
