How it works

The Method

The Wim Hof Method uses controlled hyperventilation to manipulate the body's CO₂ and O₂ balance. By taking 30–40 deep power breaths, you temporarily reduce CO₂ levels and alkalise the blood — allowing a longer, more comfortable breath hold on the subsequent retention phase.

Each round ends with a recovery breath — a full inhale held for 15 seconds — before the next round begins. Over 3–4 rounds, the practice builds CO₂ tolerance, activates the sympathetic nervous system, and measurably improves oxygen uptake kinetics.

Step by step

How To Practice

  1. Get comfortableLie down or sit upright. Relax your jaw, shoulders and belly. Tongue rests gently on the roof of your mouth.
  2. Power breaths (30–40 reps)Inhale deeply through the nose — feel your belly, ribs and chest expand. Exhale passively, letting it fall out. Don't force the exhale. Keep a steady rhythm, about one breath every 1.5–2 seconds.
  3. Retention holdAfter the final exhale, let the breath fall out naturally and hold — don't force a full exhale. Hold for as long as is comfortable. This is your retention time.
  4. Recovery breathWhen you feel the urge to breathe, take one full deep inhale and hold for 15 seconds. Then release and begin the next round.
  5. Repeat for 3–4 roundsEach round you may find your retention time increases. Stay relaxed — never strain or force.
