Breathing Toolbox · Recovery
Equal-phase breathing — inhale, hold, exhale, hold — each for the same count. The simplest and most powerful tool for resetting your nervous system between efforts and restoring W′bal at rest holds.
How it works
Box breathing — also called 4:4:4:4 breathing — divides each breath cycle into four equal phases: inhale, hold full, exhale, hold empty. The equal duration of each phase creates a balanced, symmetrical breath cycle that powerfully activates the parasympathetic nervous system.
Used by Navy SEALs, athletes, and coaches worldwide, box breathing is the go-to tool for calming under pressure. For climbers, it's ideal at rest holds, between redpoint burns, or any time you need to bring heart rate down and restore your W′ reserve.

Pranaclimb Coaching
Inhale
"Breathe into your belly first — slow and even, all the way up."
Hold Full
"Hold it gently — full and still, no tension."
Exhale
"Release it all — slow and steady, let go completely."

Box Breathing vs Mindfulness Meditation
In a randomised controlled trial comparing daily 5-minute breathwork practices against mindfulness meditation over one month, box breathing (equal duration inhale, hold, exhale, hold) produced significant improvements in mood and reduction in physiological arousal — including respiratory rate, heart rate, and heart rate variability. All breathwork conditions outperformed meditation for physiological outcomes.

Box Breathing in the Pranaclimb Framework
Within the Pranaclimb zone model, box breathing sits firmly in the recovery zone (BR 15–25 BPM). Its symmetrical phase structure provides consistent CO₂ management, keeps ventilation smooth and controlled, and activates the parasympathetic nervous system to accelerate HRR₆₀ and W′ recharge between efforts.
