How it works

The Method

Cyclic sighing uses an exhale-focused breathing pattern — a full inhale through the nose, a short second sniff to fully inflate the lungs, and then a long, slow exhale through the mouth that is longer than both inhales combined.

The extended exhale is the key mechanism. It activates the parasympathetic nervous system more powerfully than any other breath pattern — lowering heart rate, reducing respiratory rate, and calming the stress response within just a few cycles.

In a landmark 2023 study by Huberman Lab, cyclic sighing was shown to be the most effective of all tested breathwork interventions for improving mood and reducing physiological stress markers — more effective than box breathing, cyclic hyperventilation, and mindfulness meditation combined.

Step by step

How To Practice

  1. Settle inSit or lie down comfortably. Let your shoulders drop, jaw soften, hands rest. You can close your eyes.
  2. First inhale — through the noseTake a full, deep breath in through the nose. Feel your belly expand first, then your ribs, then your chest. Breathe in to about 80% capacity.
  3. Second sniff — top upWithout exhaling, take a short second sniff through the nose to fully inflate the remaining lung capacity. This second sniff re-opens collapsed alveoli and maximises gas exchange.
  4. Long exhale — through the mouthNow release slowly and fully through slightly parted lips or an open mouth. The exhale should be at least twice as long as the two inhales combined. Let it be effortless — don't force it, just allow it to fall.
  5. Repeat for 5 minutesContinue the cycle, keeping the exhale as the anchor — long, slow and complete. Let the timer guide you.

Re-Opening Collapsed Alveoli

The second sniff in cyclic sighing serves a specific physiological purpose — it re-inflates alveoli that have partially collapsed during exercise or shallow breathing, maximising the surface area available for gas exchange and improving oxygen delivery with each breath.

The extended exhale simultaneously offloads CO₂, signals safety to the nervous system, and activates the vagus nerve — the primary pathway of the parasympathetic response. The longer the exhale relative to the inhale, the more pronounced the calming effect.

For climbers, spontaneous sighs during rest holds are actually a healthy reset signal — not a sign of weakness. Research by Vlemincx et al. (2016) showed that spontaneous sighs reduce tension and improve self-reported relief, supporting their use as natural recovery markers.

Cyclic Sighing Beats Meditation

In a remote randomised controlled trial (Balban et al., 2023), three daily 5-minute breathwork practices were compared against mindfulness meditation over one month. Cyclic sighing — the exhale-focused pattern — produced the greatest improvement in mood (p < 0.05) and the greatest reduction in respiratory rate (p < 0.05) of all conditions tested. The authors concluded that daily 5-minute cyclic sighing has strong promise as an effective stress management tool.

Sighs as Physiological Resetters

Research by Vlemincx et al. (2016) found that spontaneous sighs — distinct from instructed deep breaths — act as physiological and psychological resetters, reducing muscle tension and improving self-reported relief. This supports treating natural sighs on the wall as a recovery cue, not a sign of effort, and assigning a low or even negative BR adjustment in Pranaclimb's coaching model.
