The Zone Nobody Talks About
Most coaching discussions focus on the extremes: easy climbing where recovery happens, or hard crux sequences where you give everything. The Grey Zone is the territory between them — and it's where most redpoints are won or lost.
The Grey Zone is the narrow physiological band between Critical Power (CP) and the Respiratory Compensation Point (RCP). In Pranaclimb terms, that's roughly BR 45–55 BPM, RPE 8–9, at approximately 95–105% of CP. It's the zone where W′bal is draining slowly but can partially recharge if breathing stays efficient. It's also the zone where a single poor decision — a held breath, an extra scream, a moment of panic — tips the balance irreversibly toward failure.

The Physiology of the Edge
At CP, tidal volume plateaus and breathing rate begins to rise disproportionately — the first sign that the respiratory system is compensating rather than comfortably managing. This is the transition from the heavy exercise domain into the severe domain, and in climbing it has a very specific feel: the pump is building, breathing is starting to feel effortful, and the route is asking you to keep going.
Research by Caen et al. (2022) found a tolerance band of ±3–6% around CP, MLSS, and RCP — a surprisingly narrow range within which intensity can shift dramatically from sustainable to unsustainable. This is the Grey Zone precisely described in physiological terms.

What Determines the Outcome
In the Grey Zone, W′bal is depleting slowly — slowly enough that it can partially recharge if you get a good rest hold or clip stance. The route is asking you to stay in this zone long enough to reach the anchor. Three things determine whether you manage it:
Breath Rhythm
Maintaining a 1:1 inhale/exhale rhythm in the Grey Zone preserves ventilatory efficiency. Breathing that becomes ragged or uneven accelerates the drift toward RCP.
Expression Management
Every scream or uncontrolled grunt in the Grey Zone adds +3–5 BPM to Effective BR, potentially pushing you across the RCP threshold. One well-placed power exhale. Not ten.
Rest Quality
A micro-rest in the Grey Zone can partially recharge W′bal if breathing drops below CP. A rushed, shallow shake-out doesn't — it just delays the inevitable.
Psychological State
Anxiety in the Grey Zone creates sympathetic activation that pushes BR higher. CO₂ tolerance — the ability to stay calm as CO₂ rises — directly determines how well you navigate this zone.
The Micro-Reset Protocol
When you feel BR rising above 52 BPM in the Grey Zone — the signal that RCP is approaching — the Pranaclimb protocol calls for an immediate micro-reset: one relief sigh, one to two nasal breaths, and a deliberate shake-out of the arms. This is not resting. It is active intervention to prevent a drift that will cost you the route.
The goal of the micro-reset is to bring BR back below 50 BPM and allow partial W′bal recharge before the next hard section. On a long route with multiple cruxes, this is often the difference between finishing and falling.
Training the Grey Zone
Most climbers spend their training time either well below their limit (ARC training, easy mileage) or at their absolute limit (projecting hard routes). The Grey Zone is rarely specifically targeted. But it is trainable.
Zone 2 threshold sessions — sustained climbing at RPE 8, BR 45–52, for 15–25 minutes — build the capacity to hold the Grey Zone for longer before the drift to RCP becomes inevitable. Combined with deliberate breath rhythm practice and CO₂ tolerance training, this is how climbers expand the zone in which they can operate sustainably.
The climbers who make hard routes look controlled are not just stronger. They're better at living in the Grey Zone — and breathing their way through it.
