The Readiness Potential (RP) is a measurable neural signal that appears in the brain 500–2000ms before a voluntary movement. First identified by Kornhuber & Deecke (1965), it represents the brain's preparation for action — the neurological build-up of motor intent before the body moves.
In climbing, RP is the invisible moment of commitment before the hardest move. It's what happens in the stillness just before you go. The exhale, the breath hold, the settling — these are the external expression of the Readiness Potential building in the nervous system.

RP Sync is trainable. Start on easy terrain where you can focus purely on breath timing — not on not falling:
- 1On easy routes — consciously exhale as you move through each hard hold. Notice how it affects power and composure.
- 2At cruxes on your project — identify the single hardest move. Practise the RP exhale → inhale → RP Sync exhale sequence in isolation.
- 3Use verbal cues — "exhale and commit" or "breathe and move" timed to the crux. The cue anchors the timing.
