THE SCIENCE
OF BREATH
FOR CLIMBING

Pranaclimb bridges ancient pranayama with modern sports science — giving climbers a measurable edge in endurance, recovery, and focus on the wall.

The Pranaclimb Way

Methodology

A breath-led climbing performance system. Field-based, non-invasive, and built for climbing's real-world demands — dynamic movement, anaerobic bursts, expressive breathing, and micro-rests.

Climbing performance is limited as much by breathing as by strength. The Pranaclimb Methodology combines breathing physiology, breathwork training, and field-based performance metrics to help climbers improve endurance, pacing, and recovery on the wall.

Pranaclimb in 3 Variables

BR
Breathing Rate

Real-time effort marker. Tracks intensity as you climb — breath by breath.

RPE
CR-10 Scale

Perceived load — tightly correlated with BR and used to identify your thresholds.

HRR₆₀
Recovery Speed

Heart-rate recovery in 60 seconds. The clearest signal of how fast you bounce back.

⛰️ Critical Power (CP) ~45 BPM / RPE 8

The highest sustainable effort. Below this, W′bal recharges. Above it, the battery drains.

🔥 Resp. Compensation Point >55 BPM / RPE 9–10

Unsustainable intensity. W′bal depletes rapidly. The crux zone every climber knows.

Remote Breathing Assessment

Your journey begins with a comprehensive remote assessment — on and off the rock.

The Pranaclimb RBA is a remote, self-administered or coached assessment that uses Breathing Rate (BR), Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE), and Heart Rate Recovery (HRR₆₀) to identify performance zones, recovery capacity, and breathing efficiency in climbing.

What's measured in the real world

❓ What is the Pranaclimb Methodology?

A field-based system where breathing reveals performance. Pranaclimb non-invasively tracks climbing intensity and recovery — capturing real climbing cost that gyms and labs often miss.

The Deep Dive

They test your adaptability: Power → Control → Recovery → Calm → Flexibility.

👉 These five pillars show how well you cope when climbing gets real.

How the Assessment Works

A three-stage process that maps your breathing physiology to real climbing performance — in the real world, not a lab.

Step 01
ASSESS
Remote Breathing Assessment
  • Breathing Rate (BR)
  • RPE (CR-10)
  • Expressive breathing (holds, grunts, screams)
  • HRR₆₀ (60s recovery)
  • Optional: CO₂ tolerance, PEFR, SpO₂, rib mobility
What's measured in the real world
Step 02
INTERPRET
Physiological Mapping
  • ⛰️ CP ≈ 45 BPM / RPE 8
  • 🔥 RCP > 55 BPM / RPE 9–10
  • ⚡ W′bal depletion & recharge
  • 🫁 Effective BR (raw + expression cost)
  • ❤️ Recovery speed (HRR₆₀ + BR return)
What it means
Step 03
IDENTIFY
Where Performance Breaks Down
  • Early BR spike
  • Excessive breath holds / Valsalva
  • High expressive cost (bouldering)
  • Slow HRR₆₀
  • Poor CO₂ tolerance
  • Rib stiffness / thoracic restriction
  • High stress → chaotic breathing
Why effort feels harder than it should

The Pranaclimb App

Real-time breath analysis for climbers using your mic. Track fatigue, pace your efforts, and train with precision.

A mobile app that uses Breathing Rate (BR), RPE, and Recovery Tracking (HRR₆₀) to guide training, climbing, and pacing — built for climbers, by a climber.

  • 🫁 Live BR recording via microphone — raw breath-by-breath capture, no averaging
  • 😤 Expression logging — counts screams, grunts, holds with BPM adjustments
  • 🎯 RPE tracking — CR-10 slider, dropdown, or voice command (0–10B + Controlled Redline)
  • W′bal-ODE — anaerobic battery modelled live, adjusted for expressive breathing
  • 🔔 RBA Chime — audio cues for the 4-minute protocol
  • ❤️ Recovery metrics — HRR₆₀, BR return, tiredness & readiness sliders
  • 🎵 Audio export — full WAV recording for post-climb review
  • 📤 Full data export to JSON — complete assessment worksheet

Founder of the Pranaclimb Methodology

A breath-led climbing performance system · Author of Pranaclimb: Love, Breathe, Climb

Annie Anderson is an independent researcher, breathwork specialist, and lifelong climber with over 30 years of worldwide experience in climbing, yoga, and performance science. She began Trad climbing in 1991 on the Avon Gorge limestone in Bristol, and from 1998 to 2001 managed the UAE's first climbing wall in Dubai — creating and running courses from scratch.

She is the creator of the Pranaclimb Methodology — a field-adapted system that uses breathing rate (BR), perceived exertion (RPE), and heart-rate recovery (HRR₆₀) to track performance thresholds and recovery in real-time. Her work bridges sports physiology and practical coaching, helping climbers harness breath as both a performance tool and a pathway to resilience. Her research has been published on SportRxiv and ResearchGate, with ongoing submissions to peer-reviewed journals.

Annie lives with her husband and daughter beside the sea cliffs of Cornwall, where she climbs, swims daily in the icy Atlantic, and practises breathwork and yoga year-round. Her philosophy — live, love life every day — carried her through three years of Stage 4 Renal Cell Carcinoma and surgery. Family, friends, the ocean, climbing, breathwork, cold water, positivity, and gratitude continue to inspire every moment.

"Breathing is the one system that crosses the boundary between conscious and unconscious. That's extraordinary — and completely untapped by most climbers."

Her upcoming book Pranaclimb: Love, Breathe, Climb combines science, breathwork, and elite insights, offering unique practices for climbers.
